Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about image resizing

What is image metadata?
Image metadata is data embedded inside an image file that describes properties of the image. This includes technical details like camera settings, image dimensions, and DPI, as well as descriptive information like author name, copyright notice, and creation date. The most common metadata standard for photos is EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format).
What metadata can I see?
You can view camera make and model, exposure time, aperture (f-number), ISO speed, focal length, flash mode, white balance, image dimensions, DPI/PPI resolution, color space, GPS coordinates (if available), date and time taken, artist/author, copyright notice, software used, and image description.
Which image formats support EXIF metadata?
EXIF metadata is most commonly found in JPG/JPEG files — especially photos taken with digital cameras and smartphones. PNG files can contain limited metadata through tEXt chunks. WEBP files support XMP metadata. RAW camera formats contain the richest metadata.
Does my image have GPS data?
If your image was taken on a smartphone with location services enabled, it likely contains GPS coordinates in the EXIF data. ImResizer will display the latitude, longitude, and altitude if that data is present. If no GPS data appears, your camera or privacy settings stripped it out.
Can I remove metadata from images?
Yes. To remove metadata (for privacy before sharing online), you can use ImResizer's image editor to re-export the image, which strips EXIF data. Some operating systems also let you remove metadata through file properties.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All metadata reading happens entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your image never leaves your device, making it completely safe for sensitive or private photos.
Can I edit the metadata after viewing it?
Yes. After viewing the metadata, you can click 'Edit Metadata' to open ImResizer's JPG metadata editor and change fields like description, author, copyright, DPI, and more.
